The English Football League has imposed a suspended two-point deduction on Morecambe, a League Two team currently two points away from a safe position after 20 matches. This penalty was issued because the club, which competes in League Two, did not report the non-payment of sums due to HMRC within the mandatory two working days on five distinct occasions. The points deduction will become active if the club neglects to inform the EFL about any subsequent defaults related to HMRC payments prior to the conclusion of June 2026. Morecambe, currently positioned 23rd in the fourth tier of English football, released a statement, external, indicating that they “acknowledge and accept the ruling”. Jason Whittingham placed the club for sale in September 2022, but new owners have not yet been secured. Having been relegated from League One in May 2023, Morecambe had engaged in discussions with entrepreneur Sarbjot Johal regarding a potential takeover, though these negotiations ultimately failed. Tyson Fury, the world heavyweight boxing champion residing in the town, had also previously hinted at a possible acquisition of the club. Earlier this year, the club’s directors addressed an open letter to the owners, urging them to sell the club. Additionally, former captain Farrend Rawson also pressed for a sale following a three-point deduction imposed on the club last season.
