Mick McDermott, previously the manager of Glentoran, has mutually agreed to resign from his directorship at the Irish Premiership club. He stated that Cobh Ramblers possesses “something special.” This resignation follows his recent appointment on Wednesday as the manager of Cobh Ramblers, a team in the League of Ireland First Division. McDermott had previously departed from his managerial role at Glentoran in January 2023, after serving for almost four years, a tenure during which he guided the club to an Irish Cup victory in 2020. Despite this, he had maintained a position as a director for the east Belfast club. A statement issued by Glentoran Football Club, based in east Belfast, confirmed: “Glentoran Football Club has announced that Mick McDermott has stepped down from his position as a Director of the club by mutual agreement. This decision comes following Mick’s appointment as Head Coach of League of Ireland Division One side, Cobh Ramblers.” In his new capacity, McDermott takes over from Paul Hunt, who departed Cobh Ramblers last month after leading the team to an eighth-place finish in the First Division during his sole season as manager. The 50-year-old has accumulated diverse coaching experience at both club and international levels over the last two decades, including roles within the backroom staff for Iran and Qatar under Carlos Queiroz, the former manager of Real Madrid and Portugal. Regarding his move to Cobh Ramblers, McDermott commented: “From my first interactions with the club and community, I sensed something special. I look forward to building a talented squad that will make the town proud and achieving memorable milestones for the Cobh community. I’m excited to work alongside a fantastic ownership group, a committed board, and the dedicated players and staff combined with the volunteers who make this club so unique.” Bill O’Leary, the chairman of Cobh Ramblers, stated that McDermott’s appointment “reflects our ambition to bring world-class knowledge to our club.” O’Leary further added, “His track record at international and club levels speaks for itself, and we are confident his expertise will elevate Cobh Ramblers.” The Cork-based club, notable as the starting point of the senior career for Republic of Ireland and Manchester United icon Roy Keane, was acquired by USA-based FC32 in October.
