Michael Murphy, who had announced his retirement from inter-county duty in 2022, has now concluded his inter-county GAA retirement by agreeing to rejoin the Donegal squad. Speculation had circulated in recent weeks regarding the five-time All-Star’s potential return to the county squad. Following a report by BBC Sport NI on Wednesday stating that the Glenswilly native had been included in Jim McGuinness’ training panel, Donegal GAA subsequently confirmed this development. A statement from the county organization read: “CLG DhĂșn na nGall are happy to confirm the return of All-Ireland winning captain Michael Murphy to the Donegal squad for the 2025 season.” The statement further added: “We look forward to the season ahead and the possible addition of other players to our 2025 squad as well.” Murphy, currently 35 years old, had previously announced his retirement from inter-county duty in November 2022. Jim McGuinness, who guided Donegal to their Sam Maguire Cup victory in 2012 with Murphy as captain, had been unsuccessful in persuading him to rejoin for the current year’s campaign, during which the Tir Conaill men advanced to the All-Ireland semi-finals. However, due to his consistent strong performances at club level for Glenswilly, and despite his previous declarations that his inter-county career had concluded, Murphy remained consistently associated with a potential return to Donegal. Over the past two seasons, Murphy has engaged in GAA media activities, including television punditry for BBC Sport Northern Ireland. More recently, he served on the Football Review Committee, chaired by Jim Gavin, which has formulated a set of proposed new football playing rules. These rules are scheduled for a vote at a Special Congress on 30 November. Among these proposed rules are restrictions on the number of players permitted in each half, a change that could potentially afford Murphy increased space in attack compared to what he experienced previously at inter-county level. Donegal manager Jim McGuinness is anticipated to welcome the prospect of Michael Murphy joining forces with All-Star Oisin Gallen in the team’s forward line. Oisin Gallen’s strong offensive performances for Donegal this year resulted in him receiving an All-Star award, and Donegal manager McGuinness is expected to be enthusiastic about the Sean MacCumhaills player combining with Murphy in the Tir Conaill forward line. Regarding their championship scoring performance this year, Donegal significantly depended on players such as Peadar Mogan and Caolan McGonagle making forward runs, while Gallen bore a substantial portion of the attacking responsibility for their overall score. McGuinness is expected to hope that Murphy’s return will alleviate some of the attacking pressure on Gallen, and also provide the Sean MacCumhaills player with an opportunity to benefit from the experience of the five-time All-Star. During the 2022 season, Murphy’s extensive 15-year inter-county career appeared to be taking its toll; however, his subsequent performances for Glenswilly in recent seasons suggested he remained capable of contributing effectively for Donegal. Consequently, there is considerable anticipation within the county following the announcement made on Wednesday.
