Javier Aguirre, who was reappointed as Mexico’s manager in July, sustained a facial injury with blood flowing after being struck by a full beer can. The incident occurred following the conclusion of his team’s 2-0 loss to Honduras. The projectile was launched from the spectator stands, hitting the 65-year-old as he moved to shake hands with Honduras manager Reinaldo Rueda after the initial match of their Nations League quarter-final. Despite blood visible on his face, Aguirre extended congratulations to Rueda and downplayed the event during his post-match press conference. He stated with a smile, “They deserved to win, they were better than us in areas, I’ve got nothing left but to congratulate them, and well, to try to lift my team’s spirit.” He further added, “The other thing, there’s no point in even mentioning it because well it’s football, I’m not one to complain.” The Mexican football federation declared that such conduct “has no place in our sport.” It further stated, “We demand that Concacaf takes immediate and decisive action to address this matter,” emphasizing, “Soccer should be a celebration, not a battleground.” Concacaf, officially known as the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, announced its intention to investigate the occurrence. The governing body affirmed, “The security of the teams and fans is a priority for Concacaf. These types of violent behaviours have no place in football.” Honduras manager Rueda expressed that the incident diminished his team’s triumph. Rueda remarked, “I’m sad because he’s a human being. They hit the coach, that can’t happen.” Celtic winger Luis Palma was responsible for both of Honduras’s goals, having entered the game as a substitute. The return leg is scheduled for 20 November, and the victor of the quarter-final will secure a spot in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup.
