Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte secured a dramatic victory for Uruguay against Colombia in South American World Cup qualifying, scoring in the 101st minute. This result propelled Uruguay into second place in the World Cup qualifying table. The 23-year-old player netted from close range during the 11th minute of stoppage time, concluding Uruguay’s four-match period without a win. This marked the former Sporting midfielder’s inaugural goal for his national team, positioning Uruguay in second place in the 2026 World Cup qualifying table, three points adrift of current holders Argentina. Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa commented, stating, “Triumphs like today’s are healing in the sense that they bring all the parties that are around such a strong feeling, as in Uruguay it is the national team. It was essential to win again. Regardless of the way it happened, which was very exciting, it was a necessary victory. We are heading in the right direction.” Colombia initially took the lead with a remarkable free-kick delivered by midfielder Juan Quintero. Following the break, Uruguay gained the lead through two goals scored within three minutes, featuring an own goal by Davinson Sanchez followed by a strike from Rodrigo Aguirre. Uruguay’s streak without a win appeared set to persist after Colombia equalized six minutes into stoppage time, courtesy of substitute Andres Gomez. This goal was upheld after an extensive VAR review, resulting in Uruguay not restarting play from kick-off until the 100th minute. Nevertheless, sufficient time remained for Ugarte to secure the winning goal, as he scored from the edge of the box, marking his first goal in 27 international appearances.
