Manchester United seems to be progressing rapidly in their search for a permanent replacement for Erik ten Hag, aiming to avert a scenario similar to December 2018. Following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal, the club appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a revered former player, as interim manager. Solskjaer subsequently achieved victories in his initial eight matches and maintained an 11-game unbeaten streak. This improvement in performance, alongside a notable Champions League triumph against Paris St-Germain in Paris, led the club to offer him the permanent position. However, he failed to secure any trophies and consequently did not complete his three-year contract. Ahead of the international break, with four home fixtures scheduled, Ruud van Nistelrooy, another former player highly regarded by the Old Trafford supporters, is set to manage the team in the Carabao Cup match against Leicester. Sporting has indicated that United is ready to activate the £8.3m release clause for their manager, Ruben Amorim. Amorim has stated that “he has not yet made a decision,” but his confirmation as United’s next manager might occur before the upcoming weekend’s game against Chelsea, though the precise timing of his assumption of duties remains uncertain. Van Nistelrooy expressed that it is a “great honour” to manage the club for the duration requested. Nevertheless, should he succeed in delivering engaging football and positive results, there could be growing calls for him to be given a permanent opportunity. United has the option to prevent such a situation by making a prompt appointment, or they risk encountering another difficult choice in the near future.
