Manchester United concluded the Women’s Super League winter break period having secured three points, albeit narrowly. Their 1-0 away victory over Crystal Palace could have been more decisive, but United’s limited offensive capability nearly proved costly. Manager Marc Skinner has drawn criticism this season from certain segments of the United fanbase due to his conservative playing style, which has led to three draws in their 10 games. United has scored only 16 goals so far this term; in comparison, Chelsea has netted 31, Manchester City has 10 fewer than the WSL leaders, and Arsenal has managed four more than United. The visiting team maintained significant control of the match, registering 14 shots, yet only three of these were on target. Had it not been for a defensive error by Palace in the final moments of the first half, Skinner’s side might not have scored at all. Despite their low goal count, United currently sits in fourth place, just a point behind second-placed City, and has a Champions League spot firmly in its sights when the season resumes in January. This strong league position is largely attributed to their exceptional defensive record, having conceded only three goals. To provide context, league leaders Chelsea have conceded six. When the league recommences in January, Ella Toone may be fit to return to action following a calf injury, and United will require her to perform at her peak.
