Luke Littler, currently ranked fifth globally, advanced to the second round of the Players Championship following a dominant 6-0 win against Rob Cross. Littler gained an early advantage with a break of throw. When Cross missed the bullseye attempting to win the fourth leg, the 17-year-old perceived the possibility of a whitewash. Littler, who had previously won the Grand Slam of Darts on Sunday, then comfortably secured the final two legs. He concluded the match with a 112.73 average, having registered four 180s. The teenager is scheduled to compete against fellow Englishman Ritchie Edhouse in the second round. Reigning world champion Luke Humphries also progressed smoothly in Minehead, securing a 6-2 victory over Germany’s Gabriel Clemens. Humphries achieved an 11-dart leg, establishing a 4-0 lead. Clemens, however, briefly rallied to win the subsequent two legs before missing an opportunity to reduce the deficit further. This seemed to re-energize defending champion Humphries, who then comfortably secured the following two legs, setting up a match against veteran Raymond van Barneveld. In other results, Michael van Gerwen was eliminated in a surprising 6-1 defeat by Ian White, who is ranked 59th in the world. The 54-year-old White performed exceptionally, achieving an average of 102.69, while the Dutchman appeared to lack consistency. Top seed Chris Dobey also exited the tournament, following a subpar performance that resulted in a 6-1 defeat by Nathan Aspinall. Gerwyn Price also experienced an upset, losing 6-4 to France’s Thibault Tricole, ranked 83rd globally, while Ryan Meikle secured a 6-5 victory over Gary Anderson after a determined comeback. Peter Wright and Stephen Bunting were also eliminated, suffering 6-1 and 6-2 defeats against Daryl Gurney and Mario Vandenbogaerde, respectively.
