Lei Peifan’s triumph at the Scottish Open has created new opportunities for him on the professional circuit. Following his remarkable win, the young Chinese competitor significantly advanced in the rankings and is set to increase his £100,000 earnings. The 21-year-old’s success in Edinburgh on Sunday marked a significant milestone, propelling him from 84th to 43rd in the global rankings after he defeated fellow countryman Wu Yize with a score of 9-5. This achievement positioned him as the lowest-ranked victor in a snooker ranking event since Dave Harold, who was then ranked 93rd globally, overcame Darren Morgan in the championship match of the 1993 Asian Open held in Bangkok. Lei rejoined the tour this season, having previously been relegated, and progressed through the competition in Scotland by overcoming notable players such as Shaun Murphy, Stuart Bingham, and Mark Allen. Lei’s accomplishment has already secured him valuable spots in the World Grand Prix, scheduled for March in Hong Kong, and the upcoming season’s Champion of Champions tournament. It was understandable that Lei struggled to maintain his composure as the match neared its conclusion against his equally 21-year-old opponent, Wu, in what was professional snooker’s inaugural final featuring two players born in the 21st Century. “I kept picturing myself winning the title if I made the next shot, but I tried to stay calm and prepare myself for each shot,” Lei stated to the WST website, external. He added, “Coming back to the professional circuit this year, my goal was just to keep my place on the tour. I’ve already been relegated twice before. I didn’t expect this result at all and it came so fast.” Lei is now aiming for additional titles, and a substantial financial reward could be within reach if he concludes this season at the top of the Home Nations Series money list. With only the Welsh Open remaining in February, Lei’s total earnings stand at £110,000, placing him merely £8,600 behind the current leader, Neil Robertson. To guarantee his participation in the Llandudno draw, Lei must win a qualifying match, as the individual who tops the money list is slated to receive a £150,000 bonus.
