McLaren driver Lando Norris has expressed his belief that he can mount a stronger challenge against the recently crowned 2024 champion, Max Verstappen, for the Formula 1 title in the upcoming season. Verstappen secured the championship after finishing fifth at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Sunday, a result that placed his total points tally out of reach for his closest competitor, Norris, with two races still to be contested. Despite trailing Verstappen by 63 points, the British racer stated that he and his team intend to commence the next season with the conviction that they can secure the drivers’ championship. “Next year we will go into the season with a car we think we can win the championship with from the first race and I’m very excited for that,” he said. Norris further stated: “I feel like I can fight for a championship, I can say that confidently, I have what it takes, some things to work on for sure and I can fight against Max.” Verstappen’s recent championship victory further solidified his dominance in Formula 1, marking his fourth consecutive title. The Dutch driver began the year with his characteristic strong performance, clinching four of the initial five races; however, the season progressively intensified, with six additional drivers also achieving race victories. Among these victors was Norris, who achieved his inaugural Formula 1 win at the Miami Grand Prix in May. Norris subsequently secured additional victories at the Dutch and Singapore Grands Prix, but he required a minimum of three points more than Verstappen in Las Vegas to maintain any prospect of prolonging the championship contest. Instead, he concluded the race in sixth position, one spot behind Verstappen, while George Russell of Mercedes claimed the victory. Prior to this weekend’s event, Norris had stated he “wasn’t ready” for a championship challenge this season, but he expressed confidence that the situation would change next year. He further commented: “Max is the best driver in the world and one of the best drivers there has ever been in F1, so to put up a fight against him and go wheel-to-wheel is something I love.” “He deserves the championship but hopefully I can upset him more next year.” Norris commenced his Formula 1 career in 2019, which meant a five-year wait before securing his initial race victory. Prior to the current year, he had accumulated eight second-place finishes and consistently demonstrated his skill as a driver capable of competing among the frontrunners. Before this season, McLaren’s only victory since 2012 was Daniel Ricciardo’s win at Monza in 2021; however, this year the team has secured five Grand Prix victories, with Oscar Piastri contributing two of those wins. Norris expressed his conviction that both he and the team have developed throughout the course of the season. “I feel like since Zandvoort [the Dutch Grand Prix in August] I’ve done close to a perfect job,” he informed Sky F1. “There are things I need to improve on as always, but I feel like I’ve done a good job, especially the second half of the season.” “The first half we were suddenly like ‘oh we are fighting them [Red Bull]’. I don’t think I or us as a team were mentally ready for fighting against the big boys and execute perfectly.” “As much as we would like to believe we were ready, we weren’t and we paid the price a little bit.” Although the drivers’ championship has been concluded, the constructors’ title remains undecided. McLaren currently holds the top position in the standings with 608 points, followed by Ferrari in second with 584 points, and Red Bull in third with 555 points. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella commented: “There are four teams in contention for victory all of the time. That’s great for Formula 1, but it means we have to be performing at our absolute best if we are to win the constructors’ championship. “Not very long ago, the notion that we would be in contention for the title would have been incredible, unthinkable – but now it’s realistic and we have to finish the job.” Post navigation Unai Emery Discusses Aston Villa’s 3-1 Triumph Over Brentford Saracens Secure Decisive Victory Over Northampton with Six Tries
