Kilcoo secured a place in the Ulster senior club football final by defeating Scotstown 5-10 to 0-14 at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh. A crucial period saw Kilcoo score four goals within eight minutes, spanning both sides of half-time, contributing to their victory, which defender Ryan McEvoy celebrated at the final whistle. The decisive impact of goals was evident on Saturday night in Armagh, as Kilcoo established a seven-point advantage by half-time, following a Shane Carey own goal and a well-executed goal from Christopher Rooney, both occurring within 60 seconds. Karl Lacey’s team, Kilcoo, commenced the second half by adding two more goals from two separate plays. Miceal Rooney scored first, followed seconds later by Ceilum Doherty, who delivered a superb finish into the top corner. This unanswered sequence of four goals and one point from the Down champions effectively concluded the match as a competitive contest early in the second half. Miceal Rooney scored his second goal of the match, and his team’s fifth, in the closing moments, completing a dominant display by Kilcoo. Scotstown faced a considerable breeze during the first half but managed to take an early lead after six minutes, courtesy of a well-taken score from corner-back Darragh Murray. Kilcoo responded decisively with three consecutive scores. Anthony Morgan equalized, then Ryan Johnston put the Down club in front. Among these three scores, achieved in as many minutes, was a ’45’ successfully converted by goalkeeper Niall Kane. Scotstown experienced a 14-minute period without scoring, which ended when Shane Carey converted a close-range free. However, Shealan Johnston promptly negated this score at the opposite end of the field. The Monaghan champions appeared to be gaining momentum, with their high press on the Kilcoo kick-out yielding results. Rory Beggan scored a free, and Conor McCarthy subsequently leveled the game at four points each. Jerome Johnston and James Hamill exchanged scores before the first half concluded with a decisive burst of two Kilcoo goals within sixty seconds. Beggan made an excellent save to deny Shealan Johnston, but shortly after, Jerome Johnston’s attempt was deflected off Carey and into his own net. From the subsequent restart, Kilcoo, known as “The Magpies,” gained possession, located Rooney, who then shot the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. Jerome Johnston registered his second score of the day, and Kilcoo quickly established a half-time lead of 2-6 to 0-5. Karl Lacey’s team resumed the second half with the same goal-scoring momentum they had at the end of the first, with Christopher Rooney celebrating a goal at the Athletic Grounds. Kilcoo’s initial attack of the second half resulted in Rooney scoring into the roof of the net, following a pass from Doherty who displayed a superb burst of pace. Seconds later, Doherty, having previously provided an assist, became a goalscorer himself, expertly finishing into the top right corner of the net. This extended the lead to 12 points early in the second half, effectively ending the contest. Micheal McCarville attempted to spark a recovery for Scotstown, but their increased commitment to attack created defensive vulnerabilities, which Kilcoo exploited to maintain a significantly superior advantage on the scoreboard. In the final moments, Rooney was positioned to further extend Kilcoo’s lead. When Jerome Johnston’s attempt for a point fell into his hands, Rooney capitalized by scoring his second goal into an unguarded net.
