The Kansas City Chiefs secured a 27-19 victory over the Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, positioning themselves closer to the top seed in the AFC. This win comes as quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, continues to lead the team. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, despite an ankle issue, started the game, contributing a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown to Xavier Worthy. This performance helped the Chiefs improve their season record to 14-1. The team can clinch the top seed and a first-round bye in the play-offs if the Buffalo Bills are defeated on Sunday, or if the Chiefs themselves defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day, marking their third game within an 11-day period. Mahomes commented, “Our offensive line did a great job accepting the challenge.” During the third quarter, the game experienced a delay of several minutes following a serious left leg injury sustained by Texans wide receiver Tank Dell. The incident occurred after quarterback CJ Stroud completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Dell, who then, at 25 years old, collided with team-mate Jared Wayne in the end zone. Dell fell to the turf and immediately clutched his leg. Texans players were visibly emotional as Dell was removed from the field on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans subsequently described Dell’s injury as “significant,” with external reports indicating a dislocated kneecap. In the Chiefs’ previous victory against the Cleveland Browns last week, Mahomes sustained a high ankle sprain and was removed from the game in the fourth quarter. Despite this, he participated in all team workouts throughout the week, and his readiness was evident early in the game against Houston when he executed a 15-yard scramble for a touchdown, establishing a 7-0 lead for the Chiefs in the first quarter. Mahomes further stated, “To go out there and find a way to win with everybody was a good moment for us.” Elsewhere on Saturday, the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-17, thereby securing a play-off berth and joining their opponents atop the AFC North standings. The Ravens’ win was sealed in the fourth quarter by Marlon Humphrey’s first career pick-six and a late field goal by Justin Tucker. This victory also concluded their losing streak against the Steelers, having previously lost eight of their last nine encounters. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson delivered three touchdown passes, while Russell Wilson of the Steelers threw two. With this performance, Jackson established a new single-season franchise record for touchdown passes, reaching his 37th of the current campaign and surpassing his own prior best set in 2019.
