Joe Rothwell, a Leeds United midfielder who achieved promotion to the Premier League with Southampton last season, has indicated he is “growing” into his position in the team’s midfield. This comment follows his strong performance in the 2-0 victory over Derby County. During the comfortable win against Derby County, also known as the Rams, Rothwell’s corner kick led to the first goal, scored by Joe Rodon. This result allowed Leeds to recover from a disappointing loss at Blackburn Rovers and move back into the automatic promotion spots, after Burnley had only drawn with Middlesbrough on Friday. “I was really disappointed with last weekend and I put a bit of pressure on myself to bounce back and I felt like I did,” Rothwell told BBC Radio Leeds. He further added, “I feel like I’m growing into my role every day.” Rothwell is currently on a season-long loan at Elland Road from Bournemouth and has started each of the past 11 Championship games. This increased playing time is due to long-term injuries sustained by captain Ethan Ampadu and fellow first-choice midfielder Ilia Gruev.
