Harlequins prop Joe Marler has announced his retirement from professional rugby union, stating he could no longer meet its mental and physical demands. Marler, who debuted for Harlequins in the 2009-10 season, secured two Premiership titles and a European Challenge Cup during his tenure. The 34-year-old confirmed his decision on Wednesday to conclude his 16-season club rugby career with Quins. This announcement follows his retirement from international play just weeks prior. Marler, whose final appearance for England was his 95th cap against New Zealand in July, played his last match for the London team at the Twickenham Stoop. This final game was a 48-24 Premiership loss to Bristol. Speaking to TNT Sports, Marler explained his decision: “There’s loads of reasons. I couldn’t do it anymore physically, mentally, emotionally.” He added, “After the England announcement this was inevitable, and I’d much rather go out now than try to flog a dead horse for the next six months.” Marler also revealed, “I actually quit last week and they said can you come back for one more game because Fin [Baxter] needs a rest. So I said, ‘yeah, I’ll come and say goodbye to the fans’. The time’s right when you know.” The father of four stated his intention to take “time out to chill” before deciding on his next steps. He noted that the intense pace of his 286th and final match for Quins solidified his belief that he had made the correct choice. Marler further commented on his experience: “I’m blown away by the fans here. I’ve got so many fond memories and it’s down to them and the team-mates I’ve been lucky enough to play with, but I’m ready for it.” He candidly admitted, “I was out there and I went, ‘I can’t do this, get me off’.” Reflecting on his career, he concluded, “It’s been wonderful, the game’s been so good to me considering I’ve been so bad to it. I’ve loved every minute of it, it’s been great.” Post navigation Stoke City Head Coach Pèlach Ready for Championship Resumption McGregor Reflects on “Unreal” Champions League Experience
