Residents of the Isle of Man have voiced their pride regarding the accomplishments of cyclist Mark Cavendish, who is retiring from the sport following a career marked by numerous records. Cavendish, aged 39, known as the Manx Missile and recognized as the most successful sprinter in cycling history, secured a victory in his last race, the Tour de France Criterium held in Singapore on Sunday. In July, he achieved his 35th victory, making him the most successful stage winner in the history of the Tour de France, a feat that followed his knighthood weeks prior. Lucia Shepherd, a resident of Douglas, commented that his legacy would “live on and on” and that islanders were “so proud” of him, considering him “one of our own”. Ms. Shepherd stated: “He’s influenced so many riders, there’s many cyclists on the island and there’s a very strong community.” She added: “I think we’re going to have more and more people like him coming from the island.” Throughout his career, Cavendish also earned a silver medal at the Olympics and four gold medals at the World Cycling Championships. Elliot Kinrade, also from Douglas, remarked that Cavendish had “earnt everything he achieved”. Mr. Kinrade lauded his “massive” impact on the sport within the island. He expressed: “I have a feeling he’ll be the greatest cyclist to come from the Isle of Man.” “He’s a great guy and means a lot to the island.” In August, Sir Mark completed a lap of honor at the raceway of the island’s National Sports Centre, the location where he started competitive cycling as a child. He was joined by approximately 100 local children on their bicycles. Janet Wild, from Laxey, described it as “fantastic” that the cyclist is linked with the island, which she felt was “so lucky to have him”. She noted that the island provides a “great place to train with lots of hills” and that Cavendish served as “such a role model” for aspiring competitors. She concluded: “There’s lots of young people trying to follow in his footsteps, I’m sure.” Post navigation St Mirren Secures 3-1 Victory Over St Johnstone; Public Commentary Invited Vitor Pereira Achieves Long-Held Premier League Ambition with Wolves Appointment
