Ireland captain Caelan Doris expressed confidence in the performance of starting debutants Gus McCarthy and Cormac Izuchukwu in the upcoming match against Fiji. Doris also stated that Ireland anticipates a return to a disciplined performance in Saturday’s fixture against Fiji, following an autumn series characterized by frequent penalty concessions and two yellow cards received against Argentina last weekend. Two weeks prior, New Zealand’s fly-half Damian McKenzie capitalized on Ireland’s lack of discipline, successfully converting six penalties, contributing to the All Blacks’ 23-13 victory in Dublin. These successful kicks by McKenzie stemmed from the 13 penalties Ireland incurred. A week earlier, Ireland faced an identical penalty count, struggling to secure a 22-19 win despite the Pumas concluding the match with only 14 players. In last week’s game, Ireland forwards Finlay Bealham and Joe McCarthy each received a yellow card. Despite external suggestions from Fiji regarding Ireland’s potential vulnerability this weekend, Doris affirmed that “there is belief in our camp” that the issues encountered in the previous two matches will be resolved. On Friday, the Ireland skipper commented, “The discipline has obviously been talked about a lot.” He added, “It’s an area that has been very good for us historically. We’re looking forward to getting back on track again tomorrow.” When questioned about Ireland’s two starting debutants, Leinster hooker Gus McCarthy and Ulster back row Cormac Izuchukwu, Doris characterized them as “calm and confident players and people.” Doris further stated, “They’ve come in pretty seamlessly. You look at Gus in particular who is only 21 and he’s had a pretty steep rise from captaining Blackrock in the Leinster Schools Cup a couple of years ago, to 20s, Leinster, Emerging Ireland.” He concluded, “Izzy [Izuchukwu] as well has showed his class. He’s gone on a bit of longer journey through the [Ireland] Sevens and what not. I feel they are definitely both ready and I’m looking forward to see how they go tomorrow.”
