On a recent installment of BBC Radio Manchester’s The Devils’ Advocate podcast, host Joe McGrath addressed the dismissal of sporting director, Dan Ashworth. McGrath stated: “It’s bizarre. I think there’s more to the story that they are showing. My main worry when Ineos took over was you can get all the minds in the room all at once, but if something doesn’t click there’s going to be difficulties. We can’t sack a guy for having ideas and visions, especially when he’s seen success in the past.” McGrath further noted Ineos’s actions, including increasing ticket prices for all supporters and implementing job cuts. He referenced Kath, a receptionist who sadly passed away this week, and highlighted the lack of detailed information regarding the 250 redundancies at the club. He suggested that long-serving employees, some with 10, 20, or 30 years of service and established relationships with United, had their positions eliminated instantly to achieve cost savings. He argued that these cost-saving measures have, in fact, incurred significant expenses in other areas of their operations. Examples provided included recruiting an individual from Newcastle, paying a fee, and then terminating their employment after five months. Another instance cited was the extension of Erik ten Hag’s contract, followed by his dismissal just eight Premier League games later. McGrath expressed frustration, stating: ‘Come on, figure this out’. McGrath concluded by suggesting that Ineos may not have fully grasped the extent of the difficulties involved with Manchester United.
