Manchester City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, has voiced criticism regarding Lee Carsley’s choice to include Jack Grealish in the England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland. The 29-year-old Grealish has not played for City since their victory in stoppage time against Wolves on October 20, which followed the last international break. On Thursday, England’s interim head coach, Carsley, defended his selection by stating that Grealish had been training “for a couple of days” and would undergo assessment upon his arrival for national team duty. Nevertheless, Guardiola has already confirmed that the £100m former Aston Villa player will not participate in the Premier League match against Brighton on Saturday and expressed doubts about Carsley’s decision to select him. Guardiola stated, “National teams always play in this period and I’m always pleased for players to go – when they are fit and they haven’t struggled for the past one, two, three or four weeks.” When confronted with Carsley’s comment about Grealish’s return to training, Guardiola responded: “In 17 days he didn’t train once. Today was the first training and he trained for 20 minutes. That is the reality. Yes, he was in the gym for a few minutes for the past two days but it’s a question for the manager from the UK (England) – I’m not involved.” Guardiola indicated that he had not communicated with Carsley regarding the matter and was unaware of any discussions between the Football Association and City’s medical staff. He mentioned having inquired with Grealish about the situation, and the player had expressed his desire to report for national duty. Guardiola further commented, “They can select who they want. Jack has had two or three setbacks in terms of injuries and could not get his rhythm.” This season, Grealish has experienced difficulties with his form, even after returning to training ahead of schedule, motivated to demonstrate his worth following his exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad. To date, he has contributed only two assists and has not yet scored for his team. Guardiola has been contending with an extensive list of injured players, including Grealish’s England colleagues Kyle Walker and John Stones, who have also spent time sidelined. Rodri, a Ballon d’Or recipient, has been sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury, while playmaker Kevin de Bruyne is just making his return after an absence from the team. Additionally, Jeremy Doku and Nathan Ake have both been unavailable in recent weeks. Guardiola approaches Saturday’s fixture at Brighton aiming to prevent experiencing four consecutive defeats, a first in his extensive managerial career. Nevertheless, following away losses to Tottenham, Bournemouth, and Sporting within the last 10 days, Guardiola confirmed his decision not to travel to Abu Dhabi during the upcoming international break. He has not yet committed to extending his tenure with City past the conclusion of the current season, at which point his present contract is set to terminate. His previous two contract extensions were finalized during the November international break, but this will not occur this year. “I have said many times, we won’t talk about it,” Guardiola stated. “When it happens, it happens. We’re in touch regularly. What happens is always for the benefit of the club.” Post navigation Reading FC Sale Process Continues Amidst On-Field Success Swansea Seeks Successor for Paul Watson, Emphasizing Club Understanding
