Colin Gregor suggests that Scotland’s head coach, Gregor Townsend, should utilize the upcoming match against Portugal as an opportune moment to provide fringe players with a chance to demonstrate their abilities. This follows the observation that centre Huw Jones delivered an “outstanding” performance against South Africa. The former Scotland Sevens scrum-half attributes a significant portion of the world champions’ 32-15 victory over Scotland at Murrayfield on Sunday to the greater “impact” generated by South Africa’s substitute players in contrast to those of the home side. Scotland, currently ranked sixth globally, is anticipated to be the strong favourite when they host 15th-ranked Portugal in Edinburgh for Saturday’s upcoming Autumn Test. Speaking to BBC Scotland, Gregor stated, “It’s an opportunity for the wider squad probably to get some game time.” He added, “It’s a chance to hopefully sort of broaden the depth in the squad – maybe some first caps for the likes of Ben Muncaster and Alex Samuels.” Mosese Tuipulotu, brother of Sione Tuipulotu and also a centre, has yet to earn his first Scotland cap since joining Edinburgh. Gregor remarked, “We could have another Tuipulotu representing Scotland,” further suggesting, “Which, if Sione is anything to go by, that could be pretty mouthwatering.” Gregor believes that certain aspects of Scotland’s performance on Sunday were commendable. He specifically praised their ability to “front up physically” against “the big Springboks,” calling it “definitely commendable,” alongside their handling of an early red card issued to Scott Cummings. While centre Huw Jones “was outstanding” and both full-back Tom Jordan and forward Zander Fagerson also performed well, the team failed to convert scoring chances into tries against the world champion defence. Moreover, once they “started to run out of ideas,” they gave away critical penalties. Following Australia’s victory over England on Sunday, Scotland now understands the significant challenge awaiting them in their concluding Autumn Test. Gregor further commented, “Before this weekend, you would have thought that Scotland were odds-on favourites to win that one.” He continued, “But Australia won at Twickenham, scoring plenty of points and seemed to unearth a new superstar recruit from rugby league [Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii].”
