The Canadian Grand Prix, an event hosted in Montreal since 1978, is scheduled to move from early June to late May starting in 2026. This adjustment is part of Formula 1’s broader initiative to reduce carbon emissions. This change will allow the Montreal race to take place immediately after the Miami Grand Prix, thereby eliminating the need for freight to be transported across the Atlantic Ocean multiple times. A statement from Formula 1 confirmed that the Montreal event will now be held on either the third or fourth weekend of May each year. Since the Miami Grand Prix’s introduction in 2022, the calendar has featured several European races positioned between the Miami and Canadian events. Formula 1 identified this scheduling inconsistency as an obstacle to its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2030. F1 president and chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali stated: “We applaud the tremendous effort from all involved to accelerate the temporary build of the event, to be ready to host the Formula 1 community earlier than in the past.” He added, “The change will make the future flow of our calendar not only more sustainable, but logistically more sensible for our teams and personnel.” Domenicali concluded by emphasizing, “Our Net Zero by 2030 commitment continues to be a priority for us as a sport.” In the past, Canadian organizers, whose contract extends until 2031, had been hesitant to alter their date. They cited the necessity for additional time to prepare the track and surrounding areas following the lengthy Quebec winter. The event also traditionally coincided with a broader city-wide celebration marking the start of summer. However, a new promoter, who assumed control this year, has supported the date change. Formula 1 has also expressed concerns regarding organizational issues that have emerged in recent years, with growing worries that Montreal’s event was lagging in terms of organization and facilities. Following a series of logistical problems at this year’s event, including traffic management, F1 mandated improvements. Jean-Philippe Paradis, chief executive officer of Montreal race organizers the Octane Racing Group, commented: “This change in the schedule is a major step in our commitment, as well as Formula 1’s, toward a more sustainable future.” Canada’s date modification is the latest in a series of actions taken by F1 to streamline its race calendar with the objective of greater sustainability. These actions have included relocating the Japanese Grand Prix from October to April to align it with the timing of the Australian and Chinese races, moving the Azerbaijan event to the end of the European season before Singapore, and repositioning the Qatar Grand Prix to be paired with Abu Dhabi at the close of the year. The shift in Canada’s date means that the Monaco Grand Prix, traditionally held on the last weekend in May, will move to early June from 2026.
