Simona Halep, a former world number one, has been granted a wildcard entry into the Australian Open qualifying rounds. This comes after she has secured only one victory in her five matches across the WTA and Challenger tours since her return in March 2024, following a 19-month absence. The 33-year-old Romanian athlete had previously received a four-year doping ban, which was reduced to nine months earlier this year. Halep, who consistently asserted her innocence after facing charges for two distinct doping offenses, resumed competition in Miami in March. Her most recent appearance on the WTA Tour was in October in Hong Kong, where she was defeated in the first round. The tennis player, who holds titles from both the French Open and Wimbledon, currently ranks 877th globally. At the 2018 Australian Open final, Halep finished as the runner-up to Caroline Wozniacki. Her last participation in the tournament, in 2022, saw her advance to the fourth round. Halep stated, “I have been working hard to get ready for the 2025 season.” She added, “The Australian Open has provided me with some of the best moments in my career, so I can’t wait to be back in Melbourne and playing in front of the Aussie fans.” In other news, 16-year-old Australian Cruz Hewitt has also received a qualifying wildcard, aiming to follow in the footsteps of his father, Lleyton, by making his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open. His father, Lleyton Hewitt, a two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one, first competed in a major tournament at 15 years old at Melbourne Park in 1997, having successfully navigated the qualifying stages. The qualifying matches are scheduled from January 6-9, with the main draw of the Australian Open commencing on January 12.
