Bafetimbi Gomis, the former Swansea City forward and 12-cap France international, has declared his retirement from professional football at the age of 39. He made this announcement on French television, stating his decision to conclude his playing career. This announcement marks the conclusion of one of football’s distinctive goal celebrations. During his two-year tenure in the Premier League with Swansea, Gomis frequently mimicked a panther stalking and clawing its prey after scoring. Despite arriving from Lyon in 2014 with considerable anticipation, this celebration was only performed 17 times for Swansea. Nevertheless, he contributed crucial goals, including two against Manchester United and two against Arsenal, during his period at the Liberty Stadium under Garry Monk’s management. However, he did not replicate the achievements of predecessors such as Michu and Wilfried Bony before his departure on loan to Marseille in 2016, followed by a permanent transfer to Galatasaray. Gomis established his reputation playing for Ligue 1 clubs Saint-Etienne and subsequently Lyon. He confirmed his retirement while serving as a television pundit during the broadcast of a derby match between these two teams this weekend. His career also included stints in the Saudi ProLeague, a second period with Galatasaray, and most recently with Kawasaki Frontale in Japan. He departed the J League club last month through mutual agreement.
