Bristol Rovers forward Shaq Forde has stated that racism is “unfortunately part of” football, following an incident last month where he received online racist abuse. The abuse occurred after Forde was sent off during Bristol Rovers’ match against Reading, with a message containing racist and abusive language sent to him on social media. In response, his club issued a statement titled ‘Enough is Enough’, expressing that they were “infuriated” and “sick and tired” of such conduct “blighting the sport.” Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, Forde recounted his immediate thoughts after the incident: “When I was walking off after I got sent off I already had a feeling it would happen.” He further expressed his dismay, stating, “It’s not nice to know this can happen for getting sent off. I was more angry that it still happens in this day and age. ” Forde also conveyed his concern for his relatives, adding, “I was more worried about my family and how they would react because it’s never happened to me before. I was upset for my family to have to know that their son and loved one was going through that.” On Saturday, two banners showing support for Shaq Forde were visible at the Memorial Stadium. The 20-year-old Forde marked his return to play with a goal in Bristol Rovers’ home draw against Lincoln City that day. These banners were raised in the stadium stands following a fundraiser organized by the fan podcast The GasCast, aimed at demonstrating solidarity with Forde and other athletes who have experienced racist abuse. Prior to the game, Manager Matt Taylor described the occasion as a moment of “togetherness.” Forde commented on the club’s efforts and the ongoing issue, stating, “I know the club has done a lot to try and make sure it doesn’t happen again. But unfortunately it’s part of the game at the moment.” He also acknowledged the public’s reaction, adding, “I got a lot of messages when everything came out. I really appreciate it, the majority of the fans getting behind me and showing support.” Forde netted Rovers’ sole goal during their 1-1 draw against the Imps, scoring in the 35th minute with a curled shot from 20 yards that found the net, putting his team ahead. This marked his second goal in 10 League Games this season. Regarding the goal, Forde remarked, “It’s definitely one of my better ones, I’d put it up there.”
