Darren Ferguson, currently in his fourth tenure as manager of Peterborough United, has indicated his readiness to implement changes if the team’s defensive performance does not improve. Despite reaching the play-offs in the previous two seasons, Peterborough, also known as Posh, currently sits 13th in League One. They have conceded 29 goals in 16 games, a figure surpassed only by Blackpool. Conversely, Peterborough’s offensive output is strong, with 32 goals scored, placing them second only to league leaders Wycombe and making them the second-highest scoring team across the entire English Football League. Speaking to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, Ferguson stated, “I made clear to the players that if we were to continue [letting in] the goals we are, then they are going to give me no choice to, one, replace them, or two, try to change formation.” He further emphasized his stance, adding, “I can’t keep playing the same players if we keep conceding goals, it would be insanity really.” Following a 2-1 home defeat to Reading last weekend, Peterborough will temporarily step away from league play this Saturday to host League Two team Notts County in the second round of the FA Cup. Ferguson will gain an additional defensive choice with Jadel Katongo, who was acquired on loan from Manchester City, scheduled to make his first appearance since September 28. Ferguson confirmed, “He’s ready to play, probably about an hour, we’ll see how the game goes.” Ferguson himself will be absent from the touchline for Saturday’s match due to a ban incurred from accumulating three yellow cards this season. He added regarding Katongo’s role, “He gives us really good options in the back four or in midfield, but we don’t need him in there [midfield] as we’ve got good numbers, so [he’ll play] right-back or centre-half.” Peterborough previously engaged in two pre-season friendlies against Notts, securing victories of 1-0 and 4-3. Despite these results, Ferguson expressed admiration for Stuart Maynard’s team, who currently hold fifth place in their respective division. The Scottish manager commented, “There’s certain times in the game when they may get a little bit of control in terms of possession and that’s something we can’t get spooked about.” He further elaborated, “In the second half against Reading, they got a little bit more control and it’s important at that point that you don’t start jumping in, you follow what the game plan is and what we’ve worked on.” Citing an example, Ferguson mentioned the match against Cambridge, which Peterborough won 6-1, stating, “Cambridge is probably a good example of it when they had more of the ball than I wanted in the first 20 minutes but we were compact and then in transition we caused them all sort of problems.” He concluded by outlining his tactical philosophy: “There’s two parts to the game – when you haven’t got possession, you can go and press, and you’ve got to be good at it, or stay in shape and wait. In every game we have to do both and Saturday will be no different.”
