BBC Radio Leicester’s Owynn Palmer-Atkin addressed inquiries regarding Leicester City on Thursday. Among the questions received, Nick asked: “Any idea why our finances suddenly plummeted? We were pushing top four, but then we couldn’t compete financially. Does Top have the backing to continue his father’s dream?” Palmer-Atkin explained that following Leicester City’s FA Cup victory in 2021, the club significantly invested in supporting then-manager Brendan Rodgers. That summer marked their highest-ever net spend, acquiring players such as Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare, Jannik Vestergaard, and Ademola Lookman. This substantial investment was intended to provide the team with the marginal advantage required to overcome the top-four hurdle and secure qualification for the Champions League once more. However, this objective was not achieved. Leicester ultimately finished fifth and reached the semi-finals of the Conference League. Subsequently, the club found it unsustainable to maintain such spending levels without the guaranteed revenue from Champions League participation, which typically underpins much of the transfer activity for elite clubs. Consequently, they opted to revert to their previously successful strategy: selling a key player to reinvest in the squad. Ultimately, Wesley Fofana was sold in the summer of 2022, and the team subsequently faced relegation.
