Ben Jelf was observed in a garage’s MOT bay in Chatham, Kent, engaged in engine diagnostics and examining the undercarriage of a 2002 Toyota. He described the experience, stating, “It’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it,” and adding, “It’s like flying but being in a boat, because we’re only a few inches from the water, just skimming past.” This description pertains to his career as an F1H2O driver, which represents the pinnacle of powerboat racing. In this sport, carbon fibre vessels achieve average speeds of 120mph (193kmh) and are susceptible to being launched into the air by unexpected waves. Regarding the risks involved, he commented, “You try and put to the back of your mind what could go wrong.” He further explained, “I’ve yet to have a big accident in F1. I’ve had accidents in the lower classes, I think it helps you know where the limits are of your boat.” The Jelf family holds a prominent place in British powerboat racing, with Ben’s grandfather having competed. His father, Colin, made history in 2008 as the first individual to secure three consecutive F2 victories, and his uncle also participated in F1 racing. During the current season, Ben has competed in locations including Indonesia, Vietnam, Italy, and China. While sponsors contribute, the primary source of financial support originates from the family-operated garage. October saw consecutive races held in China, separated by a mere two-week interval. Ben stated, “We had to come back in between those races just to get some work flowing through to make sure we have enough money for the next race.” This marks his second complete season at the sport’s highest tier, where he is one of two drivers for the F1 Atlantic Team. He presently holds ninth position in the Championship standings, with a single race remaining. The season’s concluding race is scheduled to commence on 6 December in the UAE.
