It is uncommon in football for a team to require nearly seven full matches to register their first league goal of the season scored by one of their own players. Everton accomplished this against Crystal Palace at Gander Green Lane when Honoka Hayashi headed in a cross from Veatriki Sarri, resulting in a 1-1 draw with 18 minutes remaining. The Toffees have accumulated three points from their seven matches played thus far, all of which have come from draws. Hayashi’s header represented the second goal of the season for Brian Sorensen’s squad; their initial goal was an own goal by West Ham’s Camila Saez, which inadvertently secured a point for Everton last month. While the absence of wins and only one goal from their own players is far from ideal, Everton has suffered only four losses in seven games despite their offensive struggles. Through Hayashi’s header, they not only strengthened their own standing but also prevented host team Palace from establishing a five-point lead over them, thereby keeping the WSL debutants in close contention. With three of their next four WSL fixtures scheduled to be played at home, Everton, currently the division’s lowest-scoring team, has a significant opportunity to secure their crucial first victory.
