Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James has stated that Tottenham’s playing approach under Ange Postecoglou provides them with a “very good chance of getting some success.” Despite some criticism directed at Spurs’ tactics during their 6-3 home defeat by Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, James believes this particular style of play could be the key to securing trophies. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, the ex-England number one commented: “Looking at his [Postecoglou’s] claim of always winning something in his second year, no-one would really want to play Tottenham in the Carabao Cup last two rounds.” He further suggested that if the team demonstrates “that kind of effort and performance,” opponents would “have to be as good as Liverpool to beat them and as good as Liverpool were on Sunday arguably.” James noted that Tottenham still managed to score three goals in the match, observing that even with the score at 5-3 and “seven minutes left on the clock,” one might consider: “‘Is there enough time for the record for the most amount of goals in a game?'” He described Tottenham’s brand of football as one that teams would prefer not to face, citing its “very difficult and very unpredictable” nature. Addressing discussions about defence and a more pragmatic approach, James asserted that “the best way to defend is to attack.” He elaborated that attempting to “hold Liverpool back” would likely lead to a more substantial defeat, such as “6-1 or 7-1,” prompting questions like: “‘Why didn’t you have a go at them?'” Concluding his remarks, James affirmed: “So, I love the style and I think they have a very good chance of getting some success out of it – if not this season, then definitely in the seasons to come.”
