A former professional ballet dancer has expressed her goal to mirror her mother’s achievement in an annual pudding race. In 2020, Joanne Stanfield achieved the distinction of being the fastest woman to finish the 10-kilometer race in Cheddleton, Staffordshire. She was awarded the prestigious trophy and a traditional Christmas pudding, which is given to all participants upon completion. Her daughter, Georgia, is hoping to also be the first woman to reach the finish line this year. “It’d be nice to have both our names on the trophy,” Ms Stanfield remarked with a smile, also acknowledging her newfound fondness for the festive dessert. The pudding race, held in the village, is now in its 41st year, having been originally initiated by local running figure Stan Winterton. In 1983, Mr. Winterton participated in the Potters Marathon for Cancer Research and concluded it would be inappropriate to solicit sponsorship from the same individuals for a subsequent race. Consequently, he determined that organizing an event in his hometown of Cheddleton would be a more effective way to generate funds. “I’m very proud of it to be honest,” he stated. He added, “I’m quite pleased that we’ve been able to keep it going.” Annually, the race draws over 400 participants, each of whom receives the festive pudding as a reward. “The kids love it,” Mr Winterton further commented, “it all adds to the local atmosphere.” Ken Rushton, who serves as chairman of the North Staffordshire Road Runners Association, concurred that the event contributes to fostering a festive mood among attendees. “It’s the highlight of the races in Staffordshire,” he asserted, adding, “you won’t find a race with a better atmosphere.” Both runners and spectators are invited to attend the event in Cheddleton on Saturday, commencing at 14:00 GMT. Organizers also advised drivers to note that certain roads surrounding the village will be closed throughout the day.
