Liverpool supporter Jim Boardman suggests that Darwin Nunez “could be lacking confidence,” which he believes is contributing to the forward’s difficulty in converting scoring opportunities this season. Earlier on Friday, head coach Arne Slot defended Nunez, stating that he evaluates the player based on his overall contribution to the game rather than solely on his goal tally. While Nunez has demonstrated defensive effort, Boardman expressed reservations about the long-term viability of relying on this aspect of his play. Speaking on BBC Radio Merseyside, Boardman remarked, “Eventually, it could get to a point where you think that is something you can teach another striker if his instinct isn’t there.” He added that Nunez is “still young and still learning, so could also be lacking confidence,” noting the common phenomenon among strikers where “once they have a couple of goals the confidence comes back.” A potential complication is that Nunez might not receive opportunities if Diogo Jota returns from injury. Furthermore, playing in a central role appears less suited to him, with his performance seemingly improving when deployed as a wide player. Boardman concluded, “He is running out of time. I am sure he has got until the end of the season to see how he goes, but if Liverpool can buy well in the summer then he might not be here.” Given the substantial transfer fee paid for him, Liverpool might face a financial loss on the investment.
