Dakota Ditcheva achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first British woman to claim an MMA world title after a dominant second-round victory over Taila Santos. The 26-year-old fighter from Manchester concluded the bout with a series of body shots, securing the Professional Fighters League (PFL) flyweight championship and a prize of $1m (£785,000) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This triumph extends her undefeated professional record to 14 wins, a streak that includes an impressive 13 stoppages. Ditcheva stated, “I’ve been telling you, I’ve tried to tell you, I just keep proving them wrong.” She added, “The world is mine. I just beat the best girl out there. Me and PFL will come out with something amazing again.” Meanwhile, in the main event, fellow Manchester native Brendan Loughnane was unsuccessful in his bid for a second PFL featherweight world title, suffering a unanimous decision defeat to Timur Khizriev of Russia. The 34-year-old Loughnane sustained a cut on the bridge of his nose early in the contest and appeared to struggle with his timing against the 29-year-old Khizriev, who extended his own undefeated record to 18 fights. Ditcheva entered the fight widely considered the PFL’s most prominent female athlete, following an exceptional beginning to her mixed martial arts career. Since her PFL debut in 2022, she has secured nine victories, all via stoppage, with seven of these wins occurring in the opening round. Santos, a 31-year-old from Brazil and a former UFC flyweight title contender, was anticipated to pose the most significant challenge of Ditcheva’s career; however, the British fighter, much like in previous encounters, made the victory appear effortless. Having claimed last year’s PFL Europe flyweight title, Ditcheva seamlessly advanced to the international circuit, achieving three first-round knockouts to earn her place in the championship fight against Santos. Despite the significance of the event, Ditcheva appeared composed during her entrance, dancing towards the cage while a group of supporters from the UK cheered on the Manchester-based athlete. The fight commenced with Ditcheva landing a series of three leg kicks, establishing a dominant rhythm and effectively managing the grappling exchanges. She demonstrated superior striking ability against Santos, employing a variety of kicks, knees, elbows, and punches, eliciting audible reactions from the audience as the Brazilian fighter found it difficult to mount a defense. The contest concluded midway through the second round following a powerful knee and a barrage of body shots, prompting the referee to intervene and declare Ditcheva Britain’s inaugural female MMA world champion. Her celebration involved applying lipstick in the center of the octagon, followed by embracing her team, which included her mother, former kickboxing world champion Lisa Howarth, and exclaiming with elation. Ditcheva remarked, “They’ve been talking, ‘she’s just a Barbie, she should be a model’. Well a model just beat you in round two, so shut up.” She subsequently acknowledged her family, stating: “I honestly could not do this without my team. I cried pretty much every day this camp.” She continued, “These guys have kept me stuck together. My brother put his whole life on hold for me. He’s not even got a girlfriend because he’s always with me. This belt is for him.” Ditcheva not only ended Britain’s long wait for a female world champion but achieved it with a level of dominance seldom observed in women’s MMA. Her record of 13 finishes, including 12 knockouts, highlights an impressive career, and she possesses the qualities necessary to excel at the sport’s highest level. She is generating significant online attention, not only through her elite striking skills but also with her assertive personality, exemplified by her lipstick celebration following her victory over Santos. The UFC is widely regarded as the premier organization in MMA, and her win against Santos, a former title challenger in that promotion, strongly suggests her potential for success within it. Supporters and analysts are already positioning Ditcheva among the global elite, with the British athlete also becoming the PFL’s youngest champion at 26 years old. Cris Cyborg, the Bellator featherweight champion, extended her congratulations to Ditcheva, stating: “Spacing, timing, distance. Dakota Ditcheva is dangerous and only getting better with each performance.” Lerone Murphy, a British UFC featherweight and fellow Mancunian, commented: “The UFC should have got Dakota years ago. She’s making these girls looks amateur. Mad.” Loughnane had sought to become the inaugural British two-time MMA world champion, building on his previous success in 2022. However, for the duration of the fight, Loughnane—who, according to the PFL’s commentary team, may have been hampered by a leg injury—did not display the same fluidity evident in his prior matches. In the first round, Khizriev gained an advantage in grappling, evading a spinning back kick from Loughnane and maintaining control on the ground for the rest of the round. The Russian subsequently demonstrated his equally formidable striking prowess, staggering his opponent with an uppercut, which caused blood to flow from the Briton’s nose. A subsequent uppercut dislodged Loughnane’s mouthguard, sending it across the cage, followed by a takedown from Khizriev, leaving the Briton with a bewildered expression on the mat. Loughnane began to land his right hand effectively in round four, but Khizriev safely managed the final round to secure his maiden world title.
