Remco Evenepoel, a double Olympic champion and winner of two world road race titles and one world time trial title, has stated his intention to “come back stronger” following surgery for multiple bone fractures sustained in a recent crash. The 24-year-old Belgian cyclist suffered fractures to his rib, shoulder blade, and hand during a training incident in Belgium on Tuesday. Additionally, he experienced lung contusions, a dislocated right clavicle, and several torn ligaments after his collision with the open door of a postal vehicle. On Wednesday, Evenepoel posted on Instagram, accompanied by a photograph showing him with his right arm in a sling, stating: “After a scary accident on training yesterday, I underwent surgery last night and everything went well.” He further commented: “It’s going to be a long journey but I’m fully focused on my recovery and I’m determined to come back stronger, step by step.” Evenepoel expressed gratitude, saying: “I’m very grateful for all the help and support I received the last 24 hours. From the emergency services, the neighbours that helped me in the first moment, the medical teams in Anderlecht and Herentals and our team doctor.” He also added: “Also a special mention for my wife, my family for standing by me in these difficult moments and to everyone for their supportive messages.” Concluding his message, he stated: “I also want to express my support to the woman who was involved in the accident.” Later, the Soudal-Quick Step rider provided additional details regarding the crash during an appearance on Belgian television. He informed VTM that “The accident happened quite quickly.” He elaborated: “I saw the woman from Bpost was opening her door.” Evenepoel recounted: “I managed to distance myself, but I hit the door and I was catapulted to the other side of the road.” Regarding his recovery, he stated: “I will need time to recover. The first month I won’t be able to do anything pretty much.” He concluded: “Then we’ll measure the damage.” This incident follows a previous severe crash in 2020 during the Il Lombardia race, where Evenepoel fractured his pelvis after falling off a bridge. His achievements include winning the 2022 Vuelta a Espana, marking his first Grand Tour victory, and securing third place in his debut Tour de France this year. This summer, Evenepoel claimed gold medals in both the time trial and road race events at the Paris Olympics.
