Ulster lock Cormac Izuchukwu expressed his astonishment at the rapid progression of his career, particularly after making his Champions Cup debut last week when he entered the game from the bench against Toulouse. Since Richie Murphy assumed the role of head coach in March and provided him with regular playing opportunities, Izuchukwu has established himself as a key player within Ulster’s squad. Last month, he achieved his Ireland debut during their victory over Fiji, a match where they scored eight tries. He is now anticipating his inaugural home Champions Cup fixture as Ulster prepares to host Bordeaux on Saturday. “I’m still hitting milestones and hopefully they keep coming, I’m looking forward to my first Champions Cup home game at the Kingspan,” he stated. He added, “All this wasn’t in my six-month plan, every player believes they’re good enough, but I’m surprised by how fast everything has come.” Izuchukwu acknowledged the necessity of readapting to club rugby following his month-long absence while playing for Ireland in the Autumn Nations Series. He commented, “There’s been loads going on and it’s been special, lots of new things coming towards me and I’ve been trying to embrace it and I’ve been getting back into Ulster mode.” While he described it as “too soon” to contemplate selection for Ireland’s Six Nations games, he recognized the importance of excelling with his club to secure a place in Simon Easterby’s considerations. “I’ve been lucky with Ireland selection in the past with injuries and having a couple of good games before selection so whatever happens, happens,” he remarked. The 24-year-old stated that Ulster is resolute in reversing their recent poor performance, which includes three consecutive losses across all competitions, notably a 61-21 defeat to Toulouse in their initial European fixture. He further added, “Everyone hates losing and it’s not good environment to be and in you can only change it by winning and we’re just going to have to get stuck in and do what we can.” “It’s been a case of taking your medicine and moving on to focus on this week,” he concluded.
