He conveyed to the Barnsley website, external, “My intention was to play, but a combination of not feeling I could perform to the standard I expected and the amazing coaching opportunity that Barnsley have provided has meant I have come to this decision.” Hourihane concludes his professional career, which began when he relocated to England from the Republic of Ireland as a teenager, having accumulated 583 appearances. Throughout his career, the midfielder competed in league football for clubs including Plymouth Argyle, Barnsley, Aston Villa, Sheffield United, and Derby County, in addition to earning 36 international caps for his nation.
