Manager Dean Shiels has stated that Coleraine is approaching Tuesday’s BetMcLean Cup second-round fixture against Crusaders with “very seriously.” This upcoming away game follows Crusaders’ 2-1 victory over Coleraine at Seaview in October. The Bannsiders’ most recent trophy was the League Cup, which they secured in 2020. In the first round of the competition, Coleraine achieved a 4-0 win against Ballinamallard United, while Crusaders narrowly defeated Ballyclare Comrades 3-2. Shiels expressed his team’s objective, stating, “We want to go there and try to progress to get a cup run.” He further elaborated on the proximity to a final, remarking, “You are only three or four games away from a cup final. That’s the way of looking at it.” Shiels acknowledged that the draw presents a “very difficult” challenge for his squad, but he aims for them to leverage their recent positive momentum in the upcoming game. Coleraine has shown a resurgence in form, securing three victories in their last four league matches after a challenging period, positioning them fifth in the Irish Premiership table. Despite Crusaders winning the sole previous encounter between the two teams this season, Shiels conveyed satisfaction with his side’s performance in that match. He recalled, “We played so well and created so many chances when we played them in the league. “If we can go and replicate that performance then I’d be very happy.” Shiels concluded by emphasizing his team’s current mindset: “It’s a tough game but we do feel good about ourselves at the moment. We look like a team that is motivated and we will go there hungry to try and progress.”
