Claudio Ranieri has been named head coach of Roma for the remainder of the current season, marking his third tenure with the club. This appointment comes six months after he declared his retirement from management. Additionally, Ranieri will serve as an advisor to the Italian club’s ownership and will contribute to the search for a long-term manager. The club stated that the 73-year-old will “transition into a senior executive role” once the season concludes. Ranieri, who previously managed his hometown club on two occasions, including a temporary period in 2019, had retired in May following his success in guiding Cagliari to survival. His appointment follows the dismissal of Ivan Juric, which occurred on Sunday. Croatian Juric’s tenure lasted only 12 matches, having taken over from Daniele de Rossi four games into the current season. Former Italy midfielder De Rossi had managed the team for eight months after Jose Mourinho’s departure in January. Throughout his 37-year managerial career, Ranieri has coached 18 clubs in addition to the Greece national team. The pinnacle of his career was securing the Premier League title with Leicester City during the 2015-16 season. Roma had been associated with former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who recently resigned from his role as Saudi Arabia head coach. Despite an expenditure exceeding £80m during the summer transfer window, Roma currently occupies 12th place in Serie A with 13 points after 12 games, and stands 20th in the Europa League table with five points from four matches. Roma’s upcoming Serie A fixture is scheduled for 24 November against Napoli.
