Matt Eberflus, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2021, has been dismissed as head coach of the Chicago Bears after the team suffered a sixth straight defeat. The Bears experienced a 23-10 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday, which marked their third consecutive NFL defeat decided on the final play. Eberflus took charge of the Bears in January 2022, and the team concluded his debut season with a 3-14 record. They began the 2023 season with a 2-7 record before proceeding to win five of their subsequent eight games. However, their poor start has led the organization to fire a coach in-season for the first time. General manager Ryan Poles commented, “I thank Matt for his hard work, professionalism and dedication to our organisation. We extend our gratitude for his commitment to the Chicago Bears and wish him and his family the best moving forward.” Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will serve as interim head coach. Chicago, which drafted quarterback Caleb Williams with the number one pick in April, is currently at the bottom of the NFC North table with four wins and eight defeats.
