Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has declared that his team’s current performance “are ahead of my expectation” and expressed his conviction that they are poised to “dominate” English football in the coming years. Despite sharing an identical points tally and league record with Arsenal, the Italian tactician does not consider the Blues to be contenders in this season’s title race. After experiencing significant instability and inconsistent results over the past two seasons, Maresca has successfully brought a sense of calm to the club during the current campaign. When questioned about any surprise regarding the team’s progress, the Spaniard responded: “For sure. I still consider this a big job, but because it’s a big job it doesn’t mean you are not thinking to do the right things.” He elaborated, “We are ahead of my expectation – in the way we are playing and in terms of results. We started four or five months ago. It’s very, very early – a short time together.” Maresca concluded by stating, “But the best feeling I have is that there are many things we can do better and we are [going] in the right direction.” Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired the club in 2022, Chelsea has invested over £1.5 billion in players, assembling one of the youngest squads in Premier League history. Maresca has denied that the ownership has imposed specific targets for him this season, but he has articulated high expectations for the club’s potential achievements. He shared his long-term vision, stating, “What I said to owners and directors when I met them, because of the age and how good the squad is, in the next five to 10 years Chelsea is going to be one of the clubs to dominate English football.” He affirmed, “I still think exactly the same.” Regarding his immediate personal focus, Maresca commented, “In terms of a personal target, I know from outside you struggle to believe – but I’m focused on Southampton. I’m not focused on the end of the season, next season, or two seasons – because it’s not real.”
