Charlie Eastwood was photographed with his father, John, at the commencement of the Le Mans 24 Hours in June. He commented, “A lot of people who aren’t in professional sport don’t realise the sacrifices that go on.” Throughout his career, Charlie Eastwood had achieved podium finishes on numerous occasions. However, this particular instance carried a distinct significance. Only two days prior, the 29-year-old racer’s father, John, had passed away following a courageous fight against illness. During what he described as a “whirlwind week,” Eastwood was engaged in simulator training in Italy when he received news that John would be discharged from the hospital to spend his final days at home with his family. He promptly traveled to gather his wife, Cat, and their children from their residence in Portugal, so they could unite with other family members in Northern Ireland. “It was a tough time, but it was as nice as it could have been,” said Eastwood. “The whole family was there by his bedside, back at home, which was his wish.” Eastwood was scheduled for a dual commitment: competing in Bahrain in the concluding round of the World Endurance Championship with TF Sport and Corvette in the LMGT3 class, which is the third quickest category, and participating in the post-season rookie test for the Cadillac Hypercar, considered the pinnacle of endurance racing, having been chosen by American automotive leader General Motors. Having received the approval of John and his family, he proceeded to Sakhir accompanied by Cat. Following a day of testing at the track, the dreaded news arrived: his father had died. “The last few days I had with my dad were amazing. I was content when I left, it was his wish but it was tough,” Eastwood added. “In those moments you realise how important it is to have such a supportive family around.” He explained, “When I was back in the hotel with Cat I was able to process it as much as possible and the emotion started to come through.” However, he noted, “But once I walked into the paddock I still had a job to do and I tried to switch my mind off it as much as possible.” The race proved eventful for Eastwood and his fellow team members, Rui Andrade and Tom van Rompuy. After maintaining the lead for the majority of the eight-hour event, they fell to eighth position due to ill-timed virtual safety car deployment. Subsequently, Eastwood took the wheel. He recounted, “We knew we had the pace and I went all guns blazing.” He added, “We got into the lead after a good battle but we lost a little bit of time at the final pit stop, and that dropped us to fourth.” He concluded, “We managed to drive back up to second but we ended up just three seconds off the overall win. “I just wanted to do the best I could for him, myself and my family. I felt I definitely done that.” Eastwood (pictured centre) acknowledged that the podium ceremony following the race was both “tricky” and “emotional.” Even though it marked his inaugural podium with Corvette, Eastwood described it as a “tricky podium,” yet he commended his team and wife for their unwavering support during the entire weekend. He stated, “It was emotional but I was just happy to be up on the podium to finish the season on a high.” He further remarked, “It was a strange one the whole weekend.” He elaborated, “With the race and the test, it was a crazy weekend regardless of what was happening at home, but to add that was another level.” Few drivers from the island of Ireland would have avoided encountering John during their ascent through the racing ranks, whether at the Nutts Corner Circuit in County Antrim or through his extensive involvement in karting over the years. Upon completing the Hypercar test, which occurred the day after the race and was described as going “amazingly well,” Eastwood traveled back to England via Qatar to collect his children, subsequently proceeding directly to Belfast for his father’s funeral. He recounted, “I literally arrived back to a house full of people at the wake.” He added, “My dad touched and supported a lot of people over the years. We think almost 1,200 people were at the church, so it was as close to a state funeral as you could get.” Eastwood participated in the World Endurance Championship’s rookie test for Cadillac prior to returning home for his father’s funeral. Eastwood indicated that the full impact of his experiences as a professional athlete only registered when he conversed with friends and family at the service. He quoted, “The amount of people at the funeral saying, ‘I’ve no idea how you done that’, but in my head I didn’t feel like I had any other choice, or would I have wanted it to be any different.” He affirmed, “I was able to get my head in the right place to go and deliver the best performance that I could.” He further noted that the sacrifices inherent in being a professional athlete are “a bit underappreciated at times,” and that mental fortitude is the distinguishing factor between those who succeed and those who do not. Eastwood, who secured victory in the renowned Le Mans 24 Hours in the GT3 class in 2020, remarked, “You see the glitz, glamour and glory of professional sport – we are living out our own dreams.” He continued, “But there is a reason that only such a small percentage of people do make it as a professional. “I think a lot of it is in the mind and being happy with those sacrifices, and dealing with it to get your mind in the right place where you are able to go and do the job.” He concluded, “If it was easy then everyone would be doing it.” Post navigation Rob Cross Secures Spot in Grand Slam of Darts Last 16 with Victory Over Peter Wright Arsenal’s First Premier League Goal Scorer Confirmed
