Caroline Weir stated that Scotland “gave everything” during their play-off final defeat against Finland in Helsinki. The Scottish team, having secured no advantage from the first leg, conceded early goals to the home side, who adapted effectively to the freezing conditions while Scotland struggled, resulting in a 2-0 loss. In the absence of Rachel Corsie, Real Madrid midfielder Weir captained the Scottish team at the Bolt Arena and expressed that her side “couldn’t have done much more.” This outcome extends Scotland’s absence from a major tournament appearance to six years. “I think we did everything, this game came down to a couple of moments that weren’t in our favour,” the 29-year-old informed BBC Alba. She added, “The team couldn’t have done much more. Unfortunately we’ve not done enough and it’s a really tough one to take.” Weir continued, “It’s really hard to digest at the moment, it wasn’t our night. We’ve worked so hard in the last couple of years to be in this position and unfortunately we couldn’t take that final step.” Weir reiterated that despite the players’ significant effort, it ultimately proved insufficient.
