Cardiff City has officially named Omer Riza as their manager, signing him to a contract that runs until the conclusion of the current season. Riza’s sole prior experience in a senior managerial capacity was with Leyton Orient. The former Watford coach assumed leadership of the team in September, following the dismissal of Erol Bulut, which occurred after Cardiff experienced its poorest start to a league season. During his 12 matches as interim manager, Riza has presided over a noticeable upturn in form, securing 16 points and introducing a more offensive playing style. Nevertheless, Cardiff has not secured a victory in their last five fixtures, leading supporters to voice apprehension regarding the ambiguity of the managerial role. Riza arrived at the Bluebirds from Watford at the commencement of the season, transitioning from assistant coach to interim manager when Bulut was relieved of his duties on 22 September. While Riza achieved four wins in his initial seven games, the Cardiff board demonstrated indecision, allowing the search for Bulut’s permanent replacement to extend beyond two months. Both former players and the fanbase publicly criticized club owner Vincent Tan, chairman Mehmet Dalman, and chief executive Ken Choo for the absence of clear communication regarding Riza’s long-term prospects. With a recent record of two draws and three losses in their last five encounters, Cardiff currently occupies 20th place in the Championship standings, maintaining a two-point lead over the relegation zone. Owner Tan stated: “We’ve clearly seen a change for the better in playing style and performance during Omer’s time as interim manager with some encouraging results.” “After careful consideration in recent weeks as to what the best decision was for the club and this squad of players, I’m very pleased to give Omer this opportunity and wish him well.” “Our targets, clearly, are to climb the Championship table and further develop a squad that has youth and ability at its core.” “I thank our supporters for their patience during this critical review period and hope we can all enjoy better times during the remainder of this season.” Riza commented: “I am delighted to be able to continue to lead this brilliant football club, and would like to thank Tan Sri Vincent and the board of directors for the opportunity.” “We have made real progress during the last few weeks, and I look forward to continuing our work on the training pitch over the coming months.” “I’m very excited for the remainder of the season, and hope that you Bluebirds fans are looking forward to joining us.” While Riza’s current agreement extends until the season’s conclusion, he expressed a desire to prolong his tenure should the team maintain its positive momentum. He further stated: “I’d like to think that if things go really well and we performed to levels that we’re all expected to, then obviously those conversations [about staying] will all take place further down the line.” “But for me the immediate concern now is that we keep progressing, we keep performing and, yes, maybe things will happen in January as well.” “Hopefully we can step up another gear and hopefully climb up the table and be in a more stable position as a club in general.”
