Callum McGregor, captain of Celtic, has experienced benefits from his retirement from international football, as he currently leads all players in the Champions League for ground covered. In the initial four matches of the competition, McGregor accumulated 59.5 kilometers, surpassing all other participants. The 31-year-old, who ended his Scotland career in August, commented on his running statistics, stating: “I’ve always been not bad at that one.” He further elaborated: “No, listen, it is what it is, what football is these days, it’s a running game. You’ve got to look after yourself, and the boys are in a really good place, so we just try and stay on that as much as we can.” McGregor is scheduled for a period of rest this week ahead of an intense schedule, which manager Brendan Rodgers has characterized as an “ultra-marathon.” This demanding phase will involve Celtic competing in 20 matches over 10 weeks following the international break. McGregor also stated: “When you look at the games, obviously November, December, January as well, I think there’s nine or 10 games in January alone.” He stressed the necessity for readiness: “So you’ve got to be ready, you’ve got to be ready to play, the team, the squad, everyone, this little period is so important for us.” McGregor additionally praised Nicolas Kuhn’s performance this season, identifying it as a significant element in Celtic’s impressive beginning. The German winger has recorded 10 goals this season, including two during their notable Champions League win against RB Leipzig, and has contributed 11 assists. These contributions have helped Rodgers’ team secure the top spot in the Scottish Premiership and remain undefeated in domestic play. Both McGregor and Kuhn scored in Sunday’s 2-0 win at Kilmarnock. The captain commented on his teammate: “Unbelievable. His form has been incredible, especially for a young wide player. “Sometimes it can fluctuate a little bit, but since the start of the season, I think probably since that Man City game in pre-season, he’s been unplayable, and his numbers obviously back that up as well.” He concluded: “So he’s in brilliant form, and when you’ve got someone like that at the top of the pitch, you know he can relieve pressure for you and get big goals.”
