Jos Buttler has expressed his resolve to guide England’s limited-overs teams into what he calls the “next era,” following concerns that he might lose the captaincy earlier this year. Matthew Mott’s tenure as white-ball head coach concluded in July, a decision made after England’s inability to successfully defend either of their limited-overs World Cup titles. Brendon McCullum, currently the Test head coach, is set to assume responsibility for the white-ball teams starting in January, with the 34-year-old Buttler continuing in his role as captain. Buttler, having rejoined the England squad for the T20 international series in the West Indies following a calf injury, stated that he “absolutely” believed he could have been removed from the captaincy by Rob Key, the managing director of men’s cricket. “But Keysy believed I could lead the team forward and captain into the future,” he commented. “I had some good conversations with him and I said I didn’t want to be doing it because I’m the only person to do it, I want to be doing it because I’m the right person to do it.” England is scheduled to compete against West Indies in a five-match T20 series, with the initial two games taking place in Barbados on Saturday and Sunday, prior to the series relocating to St Lucia. While Buttler and Mott guided England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, their performance in the 50-over World Cup in India last year was underwhelming, securing wins in only three of their nine fixtures. Subsequently, they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of eventual champions India in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup held in the Caribbean in June. England also lost 2-1 to West Indies in the one-day international series, with the decisive match marking their 12th loss in 18 ODIs. Buttler’s four-month absence due to injury, however, has made him “determined” to spearhead England’s most recent white-ball revitalization effort. “I just want to be present and help develop the next era of white-ball cricket and just really, really enjoy this part of my cricket,” he further stated. “When you get an injury like that, it makes you realise how desperately you want to get back.” McCullum indicated that a component of his responsibility involves uplifting Buttler, whom he described as having been “miserable” at various points amidst England’s recent struggles in limited-overs cricket. “It’s obviously something I need to work on,” Buttler acknowledged. “I’m really excited about him taking over. You can see the effect he’s had on the Test team and the whole narrative around English cricket. He was always someone I’d have loved to play in a team with and now there’s an amazing opportunity to work with him as a coach.” For the T20 series, Buttler will participate solely as a batter, with Phil Salt retaining the wicketkeeping duties, and Marcus Trescothick serving as the interim head coach. Buttler revealed that the choice to relinquish the wicketkeeping gloves was made in consultation with McCullum, who adopted a similar approach during his playing career to concentrate on his captaincy role for New Zealand. “When he moved to be close to the bowler, he found it incredibly beneficial and a great place to captain from,” Buttler explained. “I’m open to something if it’s going to be good for me, good for the team. I’m quite happy fielding. There are pluses and minuses to both.” The West Indies have unveiled a 15-player squad for the initial two T20 matches, featuring seamer Matthew Forde as a replacement for Alzarri Joseph, who is currently serving a two-match suspension for departing the field following an altercation with Shai Hope during the third ODI. England’s T20 squad comprises: Jos Buttler (c), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Jafer Chohan, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Jamie Overton, Michael Pepper, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt (wk), Reece Topley, John Turner. The West Indies T20 squad for the first two matches includes: Rovman Powell (c), Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Terrance Hinds, Shai Hope (wk), Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd.
