British Olympian Jodie Williams, who secured an Olympic relay bronze medal as a member of Team GB’s 4x400m squad, has declared her retirement from the sport of athletics. The 31-year-old Williams participated in three Olympic Games, notably contributing to Team GB’s women’s 4x400m relay team that earned a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Games. Her individual accolades include European and Commonwealth 200m silver medals, forming part of her nine significant international medals achieved at the senior level. Williams conveyed her decision on social media, stating: “Dear track and field, the time has come for us to part ways.” She added: “You allowed me to achieve my childhood dreams and have taken me from an awkward little girl with no confidence to a just as awkward but much more confident woman.” Williams’ primary discipline was the 200m, where she holds the distinction of being the sixth-fastest British woman, evidenced by her time of 22.46 seconds when securing European silver in 2014. Subsequently in her career, she also achieved success in the 400m, claiming a Commonwealth bronze medal in Birmingham in 2022. Her initial global medal came as a participant in the women’s 4x400m team in Paris, where she competed in the preliminary heats. The final race saw Victoria Ohuruogu, Laviai Nielsen, Nicole Yeargin, and Amber Anning secure the medal, finishing after the United States and the Netherlands.
