Bristol Rovers have terminated the contract of manager Matt Taylor following the team’s loss to Birmingham, a result that places the club two points clear of the League One relegation positions. Taylor, aged 42, began his tenure at the Memorial Stadium on 1 December last year, signing a three-and-a-half-year agreement. During his time, he recorded 10 victories, with the club concluding the previous season in 15th place. Nevertheless, Rovers have secured only six wins from 19 league matches this current season, and the 2-0 defeat against Blues marked their third consecutive loss, positioning them 20th in the standings. Wayne Carlisle, Taylor’s assistant, has also been dismissed from his role. Coaches David Horseman and Lee Cattermole will assume interim management responsibilities. The club announced its intention to conduct “a thorough recruitment process for a new first-team manager”. A statement from Bristol Rovers conveyed: “The club would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Matt and Wayne for all their hard work during their time with Bristol Rovers, and we wish them both every success in their respective future careers.” During August and September, Rovers secured only two victories across 10 matches in all competitions, which intensified pressure on Taylor. He disclosed having an “honest conversation” with the players concerning the security of his role, preceding a short period of improved performance. The team narrowly defeated Barnsley in the FA Cup via a penalty shootout at the close of November. However, this was bracketed by a 2-0 home defeat to Blackpool and a 3-0 away loss against Leyton Orient, preceding Saturday’s match in Birmingham. Rovers have achieved only one league victory in their last seven fixtures, and their goal difference stands at -11, which is the poorest in the league apart from the four teams currently in the relegation zone. Matt Taylor marks the seventh League One manager to depart their club during the current season. When questioned about the security of his position following the Birmingham defeat, Taylor responded, “yes, but I can’t control that”. Taylor’s prior experience includes a 13-month spell as manager of Rotherham United and guiding Exeter City to promotion to the third tier during the 2021-22 season. His appointment at the Memorial Ground occurred after the exit of previous manager Joey Barton and several months subsequent to Kuwaiti businessman Hussain AlSaeed acquiring a majority share in the club. In November, it was disclosed that AlSaeed intends to purchase the outstanding 45% ownership from Wael and Samer al Qadi over the forthcoming 18 months. Days preceding Taylor’s dismissal, Lee Cattermole, a former midfielder for Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Wigan, was added to Rovers’ coaching staff. Taylor stated that this was a “club appointment” and that he and Cattermole had not met before Cattermole’s initial day.
