Jake Paul secured a unanimous decision victory over former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. The boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul drew criticism from several former world champions, including Tony Bellew, Terence Crawford, and Nicola Adams. The controversial contest, held in Texas, featured veteran Tyson and YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul, and largely failed to gain approval from the boxing community. Significant criticism preceded the event, and these sentiments largely persisted following what many described as a lacklustre spectacle. Two-weight undisputed champion Crawford expressed his views on X, stating, “I love Mike Tyson, but they [are] giving him too much credit. He looked like trash, to train that long and only throw 97 punches the whole fight is crazy. I’m just glad he didn’t get hurt out there.” Paul, who is 31 years younger than former heavyweight world champion Tyson, secured a comfortable victory on points at AT&T Stadium. A noticeable number of fans departed the venue prematurely due to the uninspiring lack of action, particularly when contrasted with Katie Taylor’s compelling defence of her undisputed light-welterweight title against Amanda Serrano, which had recently taken place. The main event largely failed to persuade members of the boxing world of its merit as a worthwhile endeavor. Tyson, aged 58, connected with only 18 punches throughout the 16-minute contest and appeared fatigued after merely two rounds. Bellew, a former cruiserweight world champion, attributed the surge in Paul’s boxing career to public interest. On X, Bellew stated, “We are all to blame for this man [Jake Paul]! We are all talking and watching. We have to stop this fool. Don’t tune into him until he fights someone who is fit, healthy and not a grandfather.” He added, “Any proper boxing people helping Paul need to look at themselves. This is just sad.” This loss marks Tyson’s seventh in 57 professional bouts, whereas Paul’s record now stands at 11 wins from 12 fights, with his sole defeat occurring against Tommy Fury in 2023. Olympic champion Adams also joined others in suggesting that expectations for Tyson’s return should not have been set so high. Adams posted on X, “I wanted to see Mike Tyson doing what he does but he is 58 years old, in exceptional shape but just not good enough to fight these young up and comers now.” Mike Tyson (right) has now suffered defeats in his last three professional fights. Following an incident at the weigh-in and a subsequent uninspired performance in the ring, numerous observers have raised questions regarding the legitimacy of the contest. Boxing expert Steve Bunce, appearing on BBC 5 Live Saturday Breakfast to analyze the fight, rejected the notion that the bout might have been pre-determined. Bunce commented, “It was a decent sparring session between a tough, young novice and a very old but once great man, Mike Tyson.” He continued, “There were rounds where Mike Tyson never threw a punch. It was not the apocalypse but it wasn’t very nice.” Bunce concluded, “I don’t think it was choreographed but it was borderline choreographed at times.”
