British number one Katie Boulter has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open, achieving this milestone following a straight-sets victory against China’s Wang Xiyu. This year, Boulter has already claimed titles at the WTA 500 event in San Diego and the Nottingham Open. The 28-year-old, who is pursuing her third title of the current year, defeated Wang with scores of 7-6 (9-7) 6-4. The match concluded in two hours and 15 minutes. Second seed Boulter secured a hard-fought first set by winning a tie-break against the world number 100, before ultimately clinching the match with a more comfortable performance in the second set. Following her victory, Boulter commented, “That was quite the match. Wang is an incredible opponent and she never lets up. She is so talented and full credit to her.” She added, “She made me work very hard today and she’s got a bright future ahead of her, that’s for sure.” Boulter, currently ranked 29th globally, secured her inaugural WTA 500 trophy in San Diego in March, subsequently defending her title at the Nottingham Open in June. Her next match, scheduled for Friday, will be against either Varvara Gracheva or Anastasia Zakharova, with a spot in the semi-finals at stake.
