Blyth Spartans Football Club has confirmed an agreement for a takeover by a consortium headed by local entrepreneur Martin Trinder. The club has secured only two victories in its 12 league matches played this season. This development follows an announcement earlier in the month by chairman Irfan Liaquat, who disclosed his intention to sell the club and confirmed ongoing discussions with a prospective buyer. Currently, the Spartans occupy the lowest position in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, having been relegated last season. The club was also compelled to postpone its two most recent home fixtures due to the departure of club volunteers. The new entity, named Blyth Spartans CIC 2024 and spearheaded by Trinder, is scheduled to formally assume control of the club on Friday, November 1. Supporters previously boycotted the team’s FA Trophy loss against Stockton, which was their last game at Croft Park, as a demonstration against Liaquat’s leadership of the club. The subsequent resignations of club secretary Colin Blackett and general manager Bryan Turner led to the cancellation of their scheduled matches against Gainsborough Trinity and FC United of Manchester. In May, Liaquat appointed former Newcastle winger Nolberto Solano as manager; however, Solano’s period in charge concluded after the Spartans did not secure a win in their initial five matches of the current season. Former Brighton & Hove Albion, Birmingham City, and Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper David Stockdale then assumed the role, having first served as interim manager. Outgoing chairman Liaquat commented on the transition to the club website, stating, “I am filled with a mix of emotions.” He added, “It has been an incredible journey leading this football club.” Liaquat further reflected, “I took on an enormous challenge two days before the club got relegated last season, and given the circumstances and financial position we inherited, I am extremely proud of some of my team’s achievements in the very short space of time we had.”
