Ben Doak’s arrival at Middlesbrough at the conclusion of the summer transfer window was initially overshadowed by the drama surrounding Ipswich’s bid for striker Emmanuel Latte Lath and Latte Lath’s initial reluctance to travel to Cardiff for Boro’s Championship game the following day. Once the situation settled, with Latte Lath remaining a Middlesbrough player, the potential significance of the 18-year-old’s season-long loan move from Liverpool became clear. Despite being highly-rated at Anfield, the Scottish winger has experienced major injury setbacks early in his career, yet competition for his signature was strong. His eight appearances thus far clearly illustrate the rationale. Doak has been Boro’s most vibrant attacking outlet this season. He operates as an old-fashioned winger, aiming to receive the ball, bypass his defender, and deliver it into the box. Boro fans adore him, as do his teammates. He seems remarkably unfazed by the attention and is enjoying the most consistent run of games in his young career. He is already considered such a pivotal part of Boro’s team that his recent withdrawal at Norwich, with Boro leading 3-1 in a game that subsequently ended 3-3, was viewed by many supporters as a significant factor in the team’s failure to secure the victory against the Canaries. However, Boro boss Michael Carrick disregards that argument, highlighting the necessity of managing Doak’s minutes due to his young age. This strategy appears to be effective for everyone involved, with Doak having recently broken into Scotland’s starting XI. The only drawback, from Middlesbrough’s perspective, is the lack of an option to extend the arrangement beyond this season. Boro’s head of football, Kieran Scott, informed BBC Radio Tees that there is “no chance” of Liverpool permitting him to join the club permanently. That, however, is a concern for the future. For now, Boro fans are appreciating Doak while he is with them.
