BBC Sport has reached an agreement with ITV to jointly broadcast live coverage of the men’s FIFA World Cup tournaments in 2026 and 2030. The BBC will air the competition across its television, audio, and digital platforms. This follows Argentina’s victory, led by Lionel Messi, in the 2022 men’s World Cup held in Qatar. The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to be the largest iteration of the event to date. It will feature 48 teams competing in 104 matches over 39 days, commencing in Mexico City on 11 June and concluding in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on 19 July. Under the terms of the agreement, both broadcasters will share the rights equally, distributing matches between them, including a shared final. This arrangement guarantees that the FIFA World Cup will continue to be available free-to-air for viewers. The BBC’s coverage will encompass live television broadcasts and highlights on its TV channels and iPlayer. Live audio commentary will be provided on BBC Radio 5 Live and 5 Sports Extra. Audiences can access 5 Live’s coverage via BBC Sounds and stay updated on all developments through the BBC Sport website and app. ITV will offer free-to-air live match coverage on ITV1, ITV4, and ITVX. Additionally, highlights and exclusive content will be available on ITV Sport’s social media accounts. The 2030 tournament is scheduled to take place across three continents and involve six countries. Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will serve as co-hosts. To commemorate 100 years since Uruguay hosted the inaugural World Cup, three opening matches will be played in South America, with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay each hosting one fixture. Alex Kay-Jelski, BBC director of sport, commented on the deal, stating: “Securing these iconic tournaments means BBC Sport is once again bringing people together for the biggest sporting moments. The World Cup is magical, something the whole planet stops to experience, and we can’t wait to show it to audiences across all platforms.” The BBC Sport rights portfolio also includes major events such as the Olympic Games, the FA Cup, men’s Euro 2028, women’s Euro 2025, the Women’s Super League, the Wimbledon Championships, the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, and Match of the Day.
